Essay about The Importance of Public Broadcast Television

In the beginning of broadcasting, public broadcasting was not quite important or seen as useful. Commercial broadcasting was all the rage; the blitz for commercial station licenses went on from the 1940s – 1950s. However, The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) did reserve many frequencies for educational television (ETV). These stations were just beginning to be used in the early 1950s for universities and other nonprofits. Public-service broadcasters try to show programming that will improve society by informing. This is the main difference between public and commercial. Commercial broadcasters only care about attracting the greatest amount of people by showing popular material while increasing their profit with commercials and†¦show more content†¦The trick was to provide programming that would serve as an alternative to commercial television. According to author Jason Mittell, â€Å"One of the challenges of this strategy is that public broadcasting has always served as the default home to programs with low popularity, as commercial broadcasters have cornered the market on genres with mass appeal.† (117) While commercial programming focuses on mostly entertainment, public broadcast programming folds in how-to shows, science shows, performing art shows, history shows, and occasionally foreign programs. This is how public broadcast television contributes in a world dominated by commercial television. In PBSs mission statement, it declares, â€Å"To achieve our goals as a public service provider, we collaborate with producers and our member stations to involve viewers in pursuits of the arts, education, and cultural, political and environmental awareness. PBS makes every effort to deliver media content that encourages viewers to become active participants in promoting change and shaping their communities, whether familial, local or global.† While PBTV may not gather the largest audience on television, it plays a vital role in t he preservation of music, art, and historical events for present and future generations to see. Social Identity in the Breakfast Club Essay Example For Students

Social Identity in the Breakfast Club Essay Breakfast Club film contained a wide variety of behavior and stereotypes. Each person had their on personality and taste at the beginning of the film. I believe that communication played the biggest part in the movie. It shows the way that people from totally different backgrounds can communicate and even agree on issues. The various types of communication and behaviors within the film will be discussed. Key terms will be pointed out and highlighted, as well as described in relation to the examples extracted from the film. To begin with the film started out with a communication climate that was both tense and without verbal communication. This was mainly due to the variance in membership constructs of the characters involved. The characters included the brain Brian, Andrew the athlete, the criminal Bender, the princess Claire, and the basket case Allison. There was a great deal of interesting nonverbal communication taking place between these people. Their reactions and responses to each other demonstrated perceptual errors, which would be shown as the story progressed. The gender conflict styles also played a role. The girls both tended to listen, rather than hold the attention of the others. This was especially true in Allisons case, whom never spoke. Allison was introduced in the movie as the basket case. Allison showed that she was obviously insecure, seating herself facing away from the rest of the room (avoidance). She would not speak out. She was non-assertive, when asked what she wanted she would not respond (impervious response). She would only sit and smile to herself. You could categorize her in to the passive aggressive label perfectly. She didnt like herself (low self-esteem), or others. She was both futile and helpless. The only way she displayed her anger was by giving a whimper. She obviously had a lot of pent up feeling, for she reveals a lot later in the movie through self-disclosure. Allison obviously lacked the respect of others, for she had no friends whatsoever prior to her time spent in this detention. She also has nervous ticks, such chewing her nails, and played with her hair. Brian was another case of insecurity. The influence of self-concept was strong with Brian Johnson for he had no sense of self. He could not meet the standards of his desired self and was therefore unhappy with himself as a person. He quivered at the non-verbal communication projected by Benders glare. Brian used passive aggression and was non-assertive. An example of these is where Bender starts acting up. Brian said weakly I think we should just do our papers. Any suggestion Brian made throughout the movie was met by disconfirming responses such as verbal abuse, impervious responses, or interruptions. Claire was the Prom Princess, she had a high self esteem, and was assertive. As well she was highly emotional throughout the film. An example of her emotional language was her straightforward statement to Bender I hate you This was after he had broken a promise not to laugh at her. Claire also had the habit of using the defense mechanism of compensation. She made up for her lack of general skills and abilities by turning the discussion to how popular and rich she was. Andrew was the jock. He was an athlete who was assertive, confident, and had high self-esteem. His problem was that he couldnt think for himself, and was in that way passive. He showed aggressive behavior when Bender acted as if he was going to urinate on the floor. Andrew turned and said you whip it out your dead before the first drop hits, the floor. Two hits, me hitting you, you hitting the floor. He again demonstrated direct aggression later on in the movie during another conflict with Bender. He said, If we werent in school Id waste you. .u0fe276e955b9fd1dce141cc352ed1102 , .u0fe276e955b9fd1dce141cc352ed1102 .postImageUrl , .u0fe276e955b9fd1dce141cc352ed1102 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u0fe276e955b9fd1dce141cc352ed1102 , .u0fe276e955b9fd1dce141cc352ed1102:hover , .u0fe276e955b9fd1dce141cc352ed1102:visited , .u0fe276e955b9fd1dce141cc352ed1102:active { border:0!important; } .u0fe276e955b9fd1dce141cc352ed1102 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u0fe276e955b9fd1dce141cc352ed1102 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u0fe276e955b9fd1dce141cc352ed1102:active , .u0fe276e955b9fd1dce141cc352ed1102:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u0fe276e955b9fd1dce141cc352ed1102 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u0fe276e955b9fd1dce141cc352ed1102 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u0fe276e955b9fd1dce141cc352ed1102 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u0fe276e955b9fd1dce141cc352ed1102 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u0fe276e955b9fd1dce141cc352ed1102:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u0fe276e955b9fd1dce141cc352ed1102 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u0fe276e955b9fd1dce141cc352ed1102 .u0fe276e955b9fd1dce141cc352ed1102-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u0fe276e955b9fd1dce141cc352ed1102:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The Most Dangerous Game Essay Andrew had made a perception error. The Role of the Media in Arab Spring A Case Study of Al

Introduction Various scholars define the term media variously, depending on their professional and personal orientation. Many of them, however, agree that media refers to a variety of information channels available in the society. In our society today, the media plays an important role in enlightening people on issues that influence their life, as well as those issues surrounding them.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on The Role of the Media in Arab Spring: A Case Study of Al-Jazeera specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Conventionally, the media gathers information, which is then passed on to the audience via different channels. The various channels used in passing the information include, among others, newspapers, television, and magazines. Depending on the form of media that is used, the information is passed to a large number of people within a relatively short period of time. Another major role played by the media i nvolves addressing the various social issues affecting members of the society. In the past, the media was seen as a platform through which people could spread their ideologies and beliefs to other members of the society (Dabashi, 2012). It is through the media that such issues as the need for gender equality and human rights are voiced and made public. The media is also used as a tool for influencing opinion among members of the public. To this end, the coverage of issues by the media enlightens many people on the state of affairs in other parts of the world. The people can voice their opinion regarding what is happening in other parts of the world. The media is also an important tool when it comes to enhancing accountability in the society. As a result of increased media independence in contemporary society, almost all matters and events are subject to media scrutiny. As a result, community leaders are kept in check and their activities monitored. The aim of such monitoring is to e nsure that things are done in the right manner. Leaders, on their part, can take advantage of the media to communicate their policies to the people. It is for this reason that media becomes an important aspect during elections in a democratic country. The leaders use the media to pass the message to their constituents. As a result of wide media coverage, information is passed over long geographical distances and to a large number of people. The media played a significant role in the recent uprising in the Arab world. For example, it is believed that the demonstrations in Egypt were organized using messages passed over such online social platforms as Facebook and Twitter. The paper will e specially focus on the role that Al-Jazeera played in the uprisings that were witnessed in Egypt. The author seeks to analyze the events leading to the ouster of long- serving Egyptian President, Hosni Mubarak. The consequences of these uprisings in the country will also be addressed. Thesis Statement The role of the media in any given society cannot be fully comprehended. The Role of Al-Jazeera in the Ouster of President Hosni Mubarak in Egypt Al-Jazeera is a Qatar based satellite television channel. The channel succeeded the BBC Arabic Television (herein referred to as BBCATV). BBCATV was an experimental channel that was set up to update the world on the events that were taking place in the erstwhile ‘unexplored’ Arab world (Seib, 2005). Before the launch of the channel, the events taking place in the Arab world remained largely unknown to the rest of the world. The channel gained international recognition back in the year 2001 after it carried a story depicting the a ttack orchestrated by the United States of America attack against Muammar Qaddafi. From that time, the channel has remained on the forefront, covering stories from all parts of the world, with special focus given to events taking place in the Arab world. The channel has also been on the forefront in informing the world on the progress made during the revolutions that were dubbed the Arab spring. The media house covered the events that saw the exit of President Hosni Mubarak from Egyptian political world. The revolution of the Arab Spring in Egypt is what commonly came to be popularly known as the Egyptian Revolution. The revolution started at the beginning of the year 2011 and was spread all over the country especially in the urban areas and most notably in the capital Cairo. At the start, the revolution was generally characterized by civil disobedience, resistance, as well as, a spate of labor strikes all over the country (Zayani, 2005). Though the revolution was greatly inspired b y the Tunisian revolution, a couple of legal and political issues fueled the protests in Egypt. The revolution having attained international recognitions, tens of media channels offered coverage to the proceedings in the country. One of the most vocal of the channels was the Al-Jazeera satellite channel.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on The Role of the Media in Arab Spring: A Case Study of Al-Jazeera specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More A number of factors inspired the Egyptian Revolution. Key among the major reasons for the revolution was oppressive policies by the government. Prior to the revolution, the country was operating under Emergency Law for over thirty years (Lynch, 2012). Under the law, non-governmental political activities, such as demonstrations and picketing, were banned. Even before the start of the revolution, the Al-Jazeera channel often highlighted the oppression of the Egyptian people by the Hosni Mubarak’s leadership. The police were used by the government as a tool to suppress any political revolutions in the country that saw the arrest and subsequent imprisonment of thousands of activists across the country without trial. Al-Jazeera’s coverage of police brutality across the country fueled the protests in the country. Economic challenges across the country often as a result of corrupt government officials also angered the Egyptian people and were also a major cause of the revolution. Corrupt elections, as well as, the manipulation of election results were also a major cause of the Egyptian revolution. Until the year 2005, Hosni Mubarak was the only candidate running for the presidency (Seib, 2005). The Al-Jazeera channel coverage of a story behind the arrest and imprisonment of Ayman Nour, a presidential candidate just before the 2005 general elections saw people from all over the world condemn Hosni Mubarak’s style of leadership. To protect the govern ment from criticism from the international community, Hosni Mubarak’s administration started censoring what was to be communicated over the media, as well as bloggers. This was contrary to the freedom of speech that had been provided for in the Egyptian constitution. During the revolution, the government suspended media activities so as to curb the spread of revolutionary ideas. The Al-Jazeera channel was not spared either with the government ordering the close of its offices and further arresting six of the channels journalists. The Channels equipment was also seized thus disrupting coverage. The Consequences of the Egyptian Revolution The Egyptian revolution saw the deliverance of the people of Egypt from the oppressive leadership of Hosni Mubarak. The ouster of President Mubarak from power necessitated fresh elections to replace the just over thrown government. Al-Jazeera as a channel was in the forefront monitoring the progress in Egypt as well as to oversee the creation of a democratic system of governance.Advertising Looking for essay on government? Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Having a large audience from across the world, coverage of live events From Egypt ensured accountability by the new government (Dabashi, 2012). Steps were also taken against key leaders in the previous regime thus discouraging leaders from engaging in such acts of bad leadership in future. Mohamed Morsi was elected as the new president of Egypt. Thought the success of the Egyptian revolution has brought hope that the country’s economy will soon recover from the effects of corruption practiced by Hosni Mubarak’s leadership, the revolution impacted negatively on the county’s economy (Korotayev Zinkina, 2011). Property of an unknown worth was destroyed during the violent encounters of the demonstrators with the security forces. The closure of businesses during the revolution also saw the government and members of the public lose billions as a result of trade disruptions (Bradley, 2008). Scores of reproductive people were also killed and other injured. Al-Jazeera w as not spared either with its equipment being seized or destroyed by the government during the protests. The revolution however increased Al-Jazeera’s popularity and has contributed to the channels growth (Beinin Vairel, 2011). After months of demonstrations and civil disobedience against Hosni Mubarak’s, leadership, the war against the oppressive regime was won by the Egyptian people. The victory to the Egyptian people however came at a price with over 846 people being killed as the protestors crashed with law enforcers. Reports show that over six thousands Egyptians also attained serious injuries during the protests with others having acquired disabilities. Footages from media houses particularly the Al-Jazeera showed security personnel use excessive force in a bid to stop protestors from carrying out their activist activities (Korotayev Zinkina, 2011). The security agencies went to the extremes of using life bullets to disperse protestors. The revolution was a sou rce of misery to many families and the society at large since a large number of people were killed or injured during the violence (Bradley, 2008). Al-Jazeera journalists also had a share of the violence with many of them being caught up in the violence as well as facing arrests. Conclusion The role of media in the society cannot be overlooked. Besides being a communication tool, the media also plays an important role in influencing opinion among people. The coverage of the Egyptian story by the media enlightened the world on the proceedings in Egypt concerning the Egyptian revolution. After the Revolution, calm and peace slowly returned in the country. Citizens however had to pay the price for their freedom through a lot of sacrifice. Many of them were killed and scores injured during the protests. The country’s economy at the time was also greatly severed. After months of the revolution, peace and calm prevailed and the Egyptians are striving to rebuild their country. Refere nces Beinin, J., Vairel, F. (2011). Due to the horrible persecution of Jews, Anne Frank and her family were forced to hide in an attic of a warehouse. The Franks daughter, Anne, kept a thourough diary of that horrific experience. Just minutes before the Franks were discovered and captured in the attic they had been stowed in for two years, young Anne made an entry to her diary. Her words stated, In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart. This expression of pure love for all mankind, can only be spoken by Anne. If we could all aspire to have this type of outlook on life we would all be much better off. Even though Anne unfortunately had to endure and suffer so much, her courage and character only grew stronger. Before Anne Frank went into hiding, she led a blissful and joyous life. She was always surrounded by her family, friends, and those who loved her. She was torn away from this ideal and peaceful life and placed into the harsh and cruel reality of war and the Nazi agenda. Anne was only thirteen years old when she had to witness all these acts of hatred and violence. As I mentioned before the Frank family was persecuted because of their religious beliefs. Although they were facing threats of death, the family never abandoned their faith and belief. They always remained true to themselves and their faith, no matter the consecunces. I can not even begin to imagine what it must have been like for young Anne. Even though Im Hispanic and a Catholic I most likely will never get to the point of suffering that she endured, ...

Management accounting Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Management accounting - Research Paper Example $120 + $6.50 = $126.50 * 500 = $63,250 (Total cost) Total sales for purchased hard drives = 500 * $154.00 = $77,000 Total profit generated from purchased hard drives = $77,000 - $63,250 = $13,750 If Malibu Systems Inc. concentrates on the ZEON hard drives market, it could make an annual profit of ($13,750 + $216,125) $229,875. By producing manufacture memory chips, Malibu Systems Inc. can sell up to 3,500 memory chips per year at a price of $65.00. Annual sales - $227,500. Production costs – $62.25 * 3,500 = $217,875 Profit generated from production and sales of memory chips – ($227,500 – $217,875) = $9,625 Production of memory chips for Malibu Systems Inc. is not a brilliant idea to invest in because it gives lower profit margins than production of Zeon hard drives. Part 2: Contribution Margin per Unit for; Purchased ZEON hard drives Contribution The formula for determining contribution is the sale price minus variable costs (Eisen 2007, 35). Supply Performance Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Supply Performance - Essay Example A lot of cooperation among various departments, suppliers and customers helps in achieving the desired performance level (Case Study). It is very crucial to manage the procurement internally to avoid huge stock of unused material and final products. Optimisation can be realised only through integrated management of supply side. Other than supply of final products, supply of information not only within the company but all members of the supply chain are equally crucial in attaining required performance as production and distribution demands an integrated approach in decision making on stock maintenance and price determination (Kannegiesser et al. 2007). Environment at the retail operations of CUERO Ltd. was not conducive. The workforce at retail stores was at logger heads with marketing staff because they were not informed about the decisions taken at the marketing end. There was no procedure to share information between retail and marketing department. Lack of information of companyà ¢â‚¬â„¢s day-to-day functions generated a feeling of left cornered by the retail staff at 60 sites of the company. They were always unaware of the happenings on sales front about the likings of customers. As a result retail employees were unable to secure replenishment of such shoes that were in great demand and needed sufficient stock to offer at their retail outlets. Although most of the retail shops were performing above satisfactory level but some retail shops were running in deficit. Huge purchases were being procured from sources outside the UK. Such things were not publicized that the company has outsourced manufacturing or buying from other sources and branding them as its own (Case Study). The Supply chain at the promotions division, Imberholme, made direct sales of shoes manufactured at the Pacific Rim and shifted to a central stock keeping location at Imberholme in the South of England. Such promotion sales were priced on the market prevalent competitive rates, delivered only for large quantities on strict terms and conditions regarding order cancellation, payment, pricing and not compensating the supplier for such orders that were not trendy enough. This behaviour was due to abundance of suppliers, which was a reason of profit generation as well but the company suffered on other counts as quality of end products was compromising, delivery was delayed, required order quantities were not delivered and customers were not happy (Case Study). Causes of business success were attributed to reduction in prices and punctuality in operations. At the warehouse end, things worked properly but there was no management on returned products; replacements were shipped free of cost resulting in difference between the cost of providing the replacement facility. Information exchange between Imberholme and the factory locations was negligible and the management was least worrisome on the working conditions at the supply side (Case Study). Thus, it can be derived from t hat in stead of following a set of approaches to effectively integrate supply, manufacturing, warehousing and customers to produce exact quantity and supply to the desired destination and at the exact time to reduce costs, the CUERO Ltd. was doing the reverse at Imberholme. Good thing was that all shops were located at commercially viable locations where sales realisation was easy besides a number of accessories were also supplied in company shops such as leather handbags,

Who Wrote the Bible Dissertation Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words

Who Wrote the Bible - Dissertation Example For instance, because it was during his lifetime that King James had the Bible translated into English, many have long believed that William Shakespeare actually wrote the book itself. There have many television programs on that subject and believers point to the 46th Psalm as their evidence. â€Å"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah. There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early. The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted. The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah. Come, behold the works of the LORD , what desolations he hath made in the earth. He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; he burneth the chariot in the fire. Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.† Their â€Å"evidence† consists of the fact is the word â€Å"shakes† is forty-six words from the beginning of the verse and â€Å"spear† is forty-six words from the end. Because Shakespeare was forty-six when this passage was printed, that is proof! Therefore, a book was first published in 1987 by Richard Elliott Friedman (updated in 1997) entitled Who Wrote the Bible? Many consider Friedman, a professor of Jewish studies at the University of Georgia, somewhat of an expert on Jewish history and culture and he has studied extensively in Israel, with excerpts of his works published in the Jerusalem Post. He is also a prolific author, for along with Who Wrote the Bible?, Friedman has also published such works as The Disappearance of God and The Bible Now (Friedman). Authors such as Dan Brown and Richard Leigh have concentrated on the New Testament for hidden authorship and meaning (such as Brown’s claim in the Da Vinci Code that Jesus Christ married Mary Magdalene and fathered a child). Interestingly enough, it appears that Friedman has concentrated most of his writings on what Christians call the Old Testament, especially in the first few books of the Bible, what the Jewish people refer to as the Tanakh. As the author himself said in the 1997 preface, he wrote Who Wrote the Bible? as a scholarly work to set his research apart from what he calls the â€Å"popular† works, a thinly veiled references to such authors as Brown. Indeed, he revealed in the decade since he published the original book, many professors and students alike had communicated with him to reveal they h ad used the book in their studies. Friedman humbly dismisses those who compare his findings to that of the rediscovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls or Darwin’s conclusions. However, he does admit that the book should be looked on as a something of a puzzle whose conclusions are somewhat irrefutable (Friedman II, 15). He begins his introduction to Who Wrote the Bible? by asking that very question, concentrating on three areas, the Five Books of Moses (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy) was supposedly written by Moses himself and Lamentations is considered authored by Jeremiah. The third area is considered indisputable by Jews and Christians alike, whether King David wrote most of Psalms. He also mentions that the Bible is such a sacred book in most parts of the

Male Carica Crude Solvent Extracts

Male Carica Crude Solvent Extracts Male pawpaw tree have flowers that grow on short stalks (Chin et al., 2001). Carica papaya is a native of the tropics of America, perhaps from Southern Mixico and neighouring central American (Morton, 1987). According to Eno et al. (2000), pawpaw is the fruits, of the plant. Carica papaya belong to the genus carica. Preliminary qualitative and quantitative phytochemical analysis of ethanol and aqueous extracts of C. papaya showed the presence of many phytocompounds. These extracts were found to inhibit these eight test micro-organisms: Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella typhi, Escherichia coli, Aspergillus niger, Penicillium notatum, Fusarium solani and Candida albican.(Okoye, 2011). Proximate analysis of leaves of C. papaya also showed appreciable quantity of ash content, crude protein, crude fat, crude fibre, carbohydrate and high calorific value (Okoye et al., 2011). In this present work, the author intends to study the preliminary pharmaceutical constituent s of crude solvent extracts of flower and stalk of male Carica papaya since little or no work had been done in this area. The aim and objective of this work is to determined the phytocompounds present in flower and stalk of male Carica papaya; to extract the crude solvent extracts of the flower and stalk of male C. papaya and to find out whether the solvent extracts can inhibit the growth of ten pathogenic fungi. Carica papaya is composed of many biological active compounds, many of which are found concentrated in the latex, which is present in parts of the plant (Madrigal et al., 1980). Within Carica papaya plants, the concentration of bio-actives will vary with position of plant, age of plant and cutivar. Also, concentration of bioactive differs between male, hermaphrodite and female plants. Female plants exude more latex than hermaphrodite and male plants. Carica papaya latex is rich in cystein proteinases which are proteolytic enzymes (caricain, chymopapain, papain and glucylendopeptidase) these constitute 80% of latex enxymes. Other enzymes present are glycosyl hydrolases (à ¯Ã‚ Ã‚ ¢-1, 3-glucanases, chitiriases and lyzozynus) protease inhibitors (cystertin and ghtaminylcyclotrunsferces and lipases (Moussaoul et al., 2001). It was reported that intake of two table spoons of pulverized papaya seeds mixed with hot water twice per day is used in the traditional management of diabetes and obesity (Adeneye and Olagunju, 2009). Carica papaya (pawpaw) contains the enzyme papain, a protease used for tendering meat and other proteins (Morton, 1987). The fruits are popu larly used and processed into juice and wine, and also cooked as vegetable (Gragson, 2001). The seeds are medically important in the treatment of sickle cell disease and poisoning related disorder. The lead tea or extract had a reputation as a tumor destroyer agent. The flesh green tea is antiseptic while the brown dried leaves are best served as tonic and blood purifier (Ezugwu, 2008). Due to its antioxidant and fibre content, it is used in treatment of ailments such as chronic indigestion, overweighing, obesity, high blood pressure (Everetta, 2003). Sample Collection and Preparation Flower stalk of male Carica papaya was collected from Adazi-enu in Anaochia Local Government Area of Anambra State, Nigeria. It was dried under air and mild sun-shine, for about three weeks and ground into powders. The ground sample was then kept in a clean polyethylene bottle until needed for analysis. Phytochemical and the extraction of the active components are determined by the methods outlined by Harbon (Harbon, 1973). The antifungal activity of flower and stalk of male C. papaya was determined by agar well diffusion method (Okeke et al., 2001). The zone of inhibition was recorded to the nearest size in mm (Norrel, 1997). After extraction of the active components using three different solvents separately (Ethanol, Water and N-hexane), the solvent extracts were evaporated to dryness at about 67, 98 and 66 °C respectively in a water bath separately. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5mg of dry ethanolic, n-hexane and water extracts were weighed into five different labeled test tubes differently. T hen 10ml of the corresponding solvents used for extraction was added to the dried extracts to make 0.1,0.2,0.3,0.4 and 0.5mg/ml concentrations of the extracts. The MIC of flower and stalk of male Carica papaya were found out by using 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5mg/ml of each extract which were added to test tubes containing 1ml of sterile medium. The tubes were then inoculated with a drop of microbial suspension and incubated for 48 hours at 25 °C. Then 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5mg/ml of amphotericin B (for A. flavus, F. verticilloides, A. parasiticus, F. oxysporum and Fluconazole (for all candida was used for positive control and water for negative control respectively. The MIC value was determined, macroscopically after incubation in comparison with the growth and sterility control. MFC; the plates (petri-dishes) were divided into six different sections and labeled with the different concentration on the base of the plates, these were used to plate out the contents of each tube with the respective sections of the plate. The plates were incubated for 18 24 hours at 37 °C after which the MFC were recorded. Three replicates were done fo r each extract concentration and control against the fungi. The phytochemical constituents of the flower and stalk are as follows: alkaloids 0.53  ± 0.01%, floaonoid 0.08  ± 0.02% saponins 0.37  ± 0.02% tannins 2.06  ± 0.01%, terpenoid 0.02  ± 0.01%, steroids 0.08  ± 0.01, phenol nil, cardiac glycoside 1.87  ± 0.02%. The flower and stalk of male Carica papaya contain an appreciable quantity of alkaloids. It could be used to remedy some diseases, depending on the type of alkaloids it contains. The presence of alkaloids signified the possession of medicinal values within the flower and stalk. Pure isolated alkaloids are used as basic medicinal agents and fungicidal properties. The presence of steroids in the sample indicates that it could be used to decrease the presence of cholesterol in the bloodstream. Saponins have been used in the treatment of cardiovascular disorders, they facilitate and ea se the process of digestion and encourage the growth of beneficial bacteria within the intestine. Saponins also contribute to health and efficiency of the immune system by binding to germs and other pathogens as they enter the body. In this sense they function as natural anti-bodies. They are found to be antimicrobial and are particularly effective when used to treat yeast a infections. The presence of cardiac glycosides in the flower and stalk of male Carica papaya indicates that it could be used, in the treatment of congestive heart failure and cardiac arrhythmia. Table 3 portrayed the result of antifungal activities of three solvent extracts of the flower and stalk of male Carica papaya on ten micro-organisms (fungi) investigated in this work. They are: A. niger, M. gyspseum, C. albican, A. flavus, F. verticilloides, A. paraciticus, F. oxysporum, C. glabrata, C parasilosis and C. tropicalis. Five different concentrations of aqueous, ethanolic, and normal hexane extracts were used. At 0.1-0.5mg/ml concentration, aqueous extract showed some inhibitory effect on eight out of the ten test fungi. The fungi are; A niger, M. gypseum, C. albican, A flavus, C. parasilosis, A. parasiticus, C. glabrata and C. tropicalis. No action was recorded on the two remaining test fungi: F. verticilloides and F. oxysporum. At 0.1-0.2mg/ml concentration, ethanol extract shows some inhibitory effect on seven out of the ten test fungi. These are: A, niger, M. gypseum, C. albican, A. flavus, C. glabrata, C. parasilosis and C. tropicalis. At 0.1-0.2mg/ml, ethanolic extr act shows no action against three fungi. These are; F. verticilloides, A. parasiticus, and F. oxysporum. At 0.1-0.5mg/ml, n-hexane extract indicated some inhibitory effect on six out of the ten test fungi. These are: A, niger, C. albican, A. parasiticus, C. glabrata, C. parasilosis and C. tropicalis. It had no action on four fungi. These are: M. gypseum, A. flavus, F. verticilloides and F. oxysporum.. Table 3 also showed the commercial drugs used as positive and negative control. Positive control using two different antibiotics specifically showed remarkable inhibitory effects on the ten test fungi while the negative control showed no action against the ten test fungi. Table 4 showed the results of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the aqueous, ethanolic and n-hexane extracts of flower and stalk of male Carica papaya on the ten test fungi. The least MIC of the aqueous extract 0.05  ± 0.01mg/ml was shown on five test fungi: These are A. niger, A. parasiticus, C. glabrata, C. parasilosis and C. tropicalis. MIC of the ethanolic extract 0.05  ± 0.0lmg/ml was shown on four test fungi. These are, C. albican, A. flavus, C. glabrata, and C. parasilosis. MIC of the n-hexane extract 0.05  ± 0.0lmg/ml was shown on five test fungi. These are: C. albican, A. parasiticus, C. glabrata, C. parasilosis and C. tropicalis. Table 5 showed the result of minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) of the aqueous, ethanolic and n-hexane extract of flower and stalk of male Carica papaya on ten test fungi. For aqueous extract, the least MFC 0.2  ± 0.01mg/ml was shown on one test fungi,Candida albican. For ethanolic extract, the MFC 0.02  ± 0.0lmg/ml was shown on one test fungi Candida albican. For n-hexane extract the least MFC 0.02  ± 0.01mg/rnl was shown on one test fungi: Candida glabrata. Conclusion The analytical investigation showed that, the crude solvent extracts of flower and stalk of male Carica papaya have antigfungal effect on these microorganisms; Aspergillus niger, Microsporum gypseum Candida albican, Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus parasiticus, Candida glabrata, Candida parasilosis and Candida tropicalis. This implies that crude solvent extracts of flower and stalk of male Carica papaya can be used to cure the diseases caused by the above mentioned microorganisms. Bioactive ingredients responsible for the antimicrobial properties of the flower and stalk of male C. papaya should be elucidated.         Ã‚   Male C. papaya Plant Flower and Stalk of male Carica papaya References 1.Okoye, E.I., Orakwue, F.C. and Ebeledike, A.O. Racism and Discrimination in Sports Essay -- Race Racism Athletics Ess

Introduction   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Dealing with the issue of sport and ethnology, three major factors come to mind; prejudice, racism, and discrimination. These factors span across gender, ethnic, racial, religious, and cultural groups. In the following paragraphs, I will discuss how these factors have played a part in the evolution of sport in our society. The first issue tackled in this paper will be racism in sports, followed by prejudice and discrimination. Racism   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  ?A definition of race might rely on an outward manifestation such as color or some other physiological sign. Race and ethnicity (and to some degree nationality) also imply a shared socio-cultural heritage and belief system. Finally, race and ethnicity harbor a physiological self-identification. Indeed, this factor is perhaps the most important in defining the identity of an ?ethnic? or ?racial? individual. It implies a conscious desire on the part of a person to belong to an aggregate of people, which possesses unique cultural characteristics, rituals and manners and a unique value system.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  North America is, and always has been, an ethnically diverse society. Yet this cultural diversity along religious, ethnic and national lines had been tolerated only in a limited degree, end even only on the dominant Anglo-Saxon elite?s terms.? (Eisen and Wiggins, 1994, p. xii). History books repeatedly show this in their pages. A person can not pick up a history book and read through the pages with out finding something on how a particular athlete or group of athletes were persecuted because of their race. Part of the American dream that is taught to our youth of is freedom, equality and the ability to move ahead in life if a person is motivated to do so. It is unfortunate that this isn?t the case; that is unless the person fits into the right sociological group.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  For instance, ?The American Dream of unlimited possibilities was shattered for black athletes. By 1900 most of them had successfully been excluded from American sport and were forced to establish their own separate sporting organizations. The most famous of these were the black baseball leagues, a loose aggregate of teams that did not achieve much organizational structure until Rube Foster founded the National Negro Baseball League in 1920. Late nineteenth-century black athletes were often disturbed by their inability to be classified by an... ...ng treated equal. Conclusion   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The concept of a perfect world where race, color, religion, political stance, and gender are all equal is a good goal to strive for. Singling out individuals or groups based on any of those characteristics is wrong. We all have room to grow, and can make a better effort to be open-minded. Sports would be a perfect place to let down the barriers. There is bias in sport today. There is racism and discrimination. Only by a conscious effort can anything be done to help move past our present state. Racism and discrimination should not be in sports, because all humans are of the same species regardless of color or origin. We all bleed and we can all die, therefore, we should all be equal. The Need for Better Mental Health Care

IntroductionMany individuals who woke up this morning wished that they should have never done so at all. There are those who are about to go to bed praying that they will not have any more tomorrows to face. While some who are at work, sitting through their classes at school, or fixing their children’s lunches are wondering what have become of their lives and what more potential does the bleak future offer. In fact, there are those whose family and friends are mourning already, never quite understanding why an apparently healthy human being would end his own life. One common thread unites all these people and events: mental depression. This paper looks at the need for more mental health care services in order to better help people suffering from this condition and thus provide hope for them and for their families.Gravity of Mental IllnessFew individuals realize the gravity of a mental illness such as depression in another human’s life. For some, the state of being depres sed is a choice, and a person can easily â€Å"snap out of it† if only they would think positively and cut all the drama. Mental illnesses just like depression, is a medical condition, an actual disease of the mind that is not easily fixed with mere will power.People sick with flu or colds are not asked to cure themselves, hence, why should depressed individuals bear their sufferings alone and without any care? It is a relief, nonetheless, that depression is not anymore new. Millions of individuals have it and millions are also seeking the necessary treatment and medication to get on with their lives. However, recognizing and acknowledging the problem, as opposed to ignoring it, is the first step towards recovery. From the early philosophers, scholars and scientists’ perspectives, depression is a mystery caused by unknown powers in the universe. Based from early accounts, depressed or melancholic people demonstrate bizarre behavior, in which nobody could pinpoint the re ason behind. Symptoms range from extreme sadness and lack of zeal in life to drastic mood changes. With the gradual development of modern scientific processes and correspondence among experts, specialists were able to define depression, identified its symptoms, and tried to discover its causes and remedies.Mental Health FacilitiesTraditional psychiatric hospitals and private psychiatrists and psychologists have been unable to meet the growing need for mental health services. The trend has been to develop local mental health clinics that offer the services of psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, psychiatric nurses, family therapists and others.Emergency help is rendered to persons with acute mental disorders as well as to persons with chronic emotional problems. Short-term counselling and psychotherapy are usually provided. Programs are planned to deal with problems involving school, family, marriage partners, drug and alcohol abuse, and adolescence. Night clinics and suicid e prevention centers are often established if a need exists. A person in need of immediate assistance is frequently helped by phone â€Å"hotline† services, manned by counselors and others, such as trained volunteers. Many non-traditional facilities have been established to meet the needs of local area. An example of such a facility is a psychiatric day care center which was developed in a sparsely populated rural area in Michigan. Lacking funds to support a traditional psychiatric day care center, a psychiatric nursing consultant sought lay volunteers and used facilities in a community church to set up a program. This program was designed to maintain and support persons referred by the local hospital psychiatric service and the community mental health center outpatient service. The nurse spent two hours one day a week as a group therapist. She also acted as a consultant to the volunteers. The program successfully met its objectives. It has grown from one group and one voluntee r to three groups and thirty volunteers.Person-Centered TherapyPerson-centered therapy is differentiated from other forms of therapy because of its â€Å"focus on the importance of the therapeutic relationship for effective therapy† (Josefowitz & Myran 2005). The person-centered approach was founded by acclaimed American counselor and psychotherapist, Carl Rogers (Kirschenbaum 2004). Early during his career, Rogers witnessed how stubborn a client could become and all together reject therapy even if it is for his betterment. He then saw that patients could resist â€Å"even the most skilful therapist intervention† if such intervention is against his wish or purpose. Rogers realized the loopholes in the popular practices of his times for failing to incite effective client participation. He pondered on a new approach based on his understanding that â€Å"it is the client who knows what hurts, what directions to go, what problems are crucial, what experiences have been dee ply buried.†Rogers was the first to employ the â€Å"non-directive† approach. It was a unique method where the counselor does not question, interpret, advice, suggest or offer any directive remarks on the patient, he only listens. The therapist carefully reflect the patient’s thoughts back to him, with the idea of helping him realize his issues and then decide on his own the direction of his self-actualization.It was this non-directive method that applied the initiative that persons going into psychotherapies are not helpless individuals at the mere mercy of their psychotherapists’ designs. Clients can wilfully determine how their treatment should go because they are â€Å"responsible clients† who knows what aspects of their lives and personality need to be treated. His method has such respect for its patients that it assumes the key to a person’s self-actualization lies on the person and not on external influences (therapists or counselors). One of Roger’s important ideas that still have its impact today and is crucial to the personal approach is that a â€Å"counselor’s attitude is as important as his techniques† (Kirschenbaum 2004)Depression as a Mental Health IssueDepression is one of the most prevalent mental health medical cases in the United States today with about 18 million Americans or 9.5 percent of the population affected. The problem of depression is not to be taken lightly, nor set aside as sheer caprice of a problematic person. Medical institutions including the United State’s National Institute of Mental Health declared it as a serious â€Å"real illness,† not just because of its prevalence, but also because of its effect on the lives of the afflicted individuals. Monetary expenses is a give fact when seeking treatment for depression, yet the heavier costs are those that concerns the pains of the individuals, the drudgery they have to face everyday, and the correspondin g effect of the situation to their friends and loved ones.Depression has already been observed since the ancient times, even during the prehistoric times. Real efforts to comprehend depression were only apparently undertaken during the time of the Hellenistic Greeks. Later part of history revealed that the growth of psychiatric or psychological science was hampered due to society’s closed mindedness and lack of concern for the mentally ill. Nevertheless, with the sporadic studies now and then, it was discovered that depression was once called â€Å"melancholia† and scientists made quite commendable documentation of the symptoms they observed among melancholic persons (Hollon, 2002).The causes of depression are often summarized into the three classifications of neurobiology, genetics and environment. Neurobiological factors pertain to the abnormalities in neurotransmitters and hormones that affect mood, manner of handling stress, and perspective of traumatic situations. Genetics, as the name implies, refers to the inheritance of potential depression-causing gene traits within the family. There is no solid proof of the existence of this gene so far, although there are relevant studies made to suggest that genetics may indeed play a role. Besides the number of cases of within-family depression speaks for itself. The last factor, triggers environmental depression brought about by emotionally taxing events that are not easily forgotten or set aside, so that it comes to haunt the person and affect his normal life. Depression may also be learned when the thought of powerlessness is so internalised. The person feels depressed with that thought that whatever actions will not merit any change or improvement.ConclusionHealth Plans generally fall into three categories based on how they are organized to deliver/pay for care. HMOs (Health Maintenance Organizations) deliver services through provider networks and may use a member’s primary care provider as a ‘gatekeeper’ to more specialized services. PPOs (Preferred Provider Organizations) generally allow access to any provider, with some cost savings to a member for using providers in the network. Indemnity plans are traditional insurance products with defined cash payments, and no network limitations. At present, prevalent types of Health Plans are HMOs and PPOs   (Health Plan). Effective policy and decision-making cannot be made in a vacuum, and is committed to providing the most comprehensive data possible. Taking that into consideration, public Health Plan performance must be well studied and its data analyzed. The HMO as well as other health care delivery systems must unite in order to address this issue since they are all important and adequate means of health care for many consumers with mental health problems.REFERENCESBeck. How to Conjugate Utiliser (to Use) in French

How to Conjugate Utiliser (to Use) in French In French, the verb  utiliser  means to use. This is pretty easy to remember because it looks and sounds like the English word utilize. French students will be happy to know that the conjugations are almost as easy. Thats because its a regular verb, so transforming  utiliser  into the French for using or used follows a very common rule. This lesson will explain everything you need to know. The Basic Conjugations of  Utiliser French verb conjugations are a bit of a challenge because you have to memorize a new verb for every tense as well as every subject pronoun within that tense. This gives you five extra words to study, but  utiliser  is a  regular -er verb. It uses the same infinitive endings as the majority of French verbs, making each new one easier to memorize. The indicative mood is where we find the basic present, future, and imperfect past tenses. These should be your top priority when studying  utiliser. Using the stem (or radical)  utilis-  and the chart, match the subject pronoun to the appropriate tense to find the proper ending. For instance, I am using is  jutilise  and we will use is  nous utiliserons. If you practice these in context using short sentences it will help you learn them faster. Luckily,  utiliser  is such a useful word that youll have endless opportunities to use it. Present Future Imperfect j utilise utiliserai utilisais tu utilises utiliseras utilisais il utilise utilisera utilisait nous utilisons utiliserons utilisions vous utilisez utiliserez utilisiez ils utilisent utiliseront utilisaient The Present Participle of Utiliser The  present participle  of  utiliser  is  utilisant. This was created by simply adding -ant  to the verb stem. Thats another rule you can keep in mind that works for almost every verb ending in -er. Utiliser  in the Compound Past Tense When it comes to the past tense, you have the choice between the imperfect or a compound known as the passà © composà ©. This one requires a quick construction using the auxiliary verb avoir and the past participle utilisà ©. When forming the passà © composà ©, conjugate  avoir  into the present tense appropriate to the subject. Then, attach the past participle, which indicates the act of using already happened. For example, I used is  jai utilisà ©Ã‚  and we used is  nous avons utilisà ©. More Simple Conjugations of Utiliser Among the other useful and equally simple conjugations of  utiliser  that you may need are  the subjunctive  and  the conditional. Where the subjunctive questions that the action will take place, the conditional says that its dependent on something else. While its not a bad idea to add the  the passà © simple  or  imperfect subjunctive  to your vocabulary, its often not a necessity. These are used only on occasion, but you should be able to at least recognize each as a form of  utiliser. Subjunctive Conditional Pass Simple Imperfect Subjunctive j utilise utiliserais utilisai utilisasse tu utilises utiliserais utilisas utilisasses il utilise utiliserait utilisa utilist nous utilisions utiliserions utilismes utilisassions vous utilisiez utiliseriez utilistes utilisassiez ils utilisent utiliseraient utilisrent utilisassent The one conjugation that does not require the subject pronoun is the imperative. For this, you can simplify your sentence from tu utilise to utilise. Imperative (tu) utilise (nous) utilisons (vous) utilisez

Academic Writing for Adults Class Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Academic Writing for Adults Class - Essay Example I believe that Academic Writing for Adults will be a good venue in which I could pick up pointers for improving my writing style. I understand that the course is for academic writing, which will provide me a greater opportunity to express myself better through my writing for the purpose of passing my courses, maybe even get better grades. In my youth, I had moderate difficulty in writing; I believe, though, that it was not so much because I was afraid of writing, or because I did not know how to write. At a young age, there appeared to be little to write about. I felt that I had not experienced as much as I had to in life, for me to gain enough insight to write about things. Of course, it was different about lessons. When needed, such as in an examination where essay writing was required, I usually could find enough to say, in order to create a decent-enough essay, and was confident in writing. When the type of writing is about impersonal things, such as subject matter that comes fro m lessons or a book, I have had little problems in writing. You might say that these are things that could be studied and memorized, then repeated when it becomes necessary to do so. However, when the requirement is to write about my personal insights and to venture my own opinions, I sometimes grope for the words that I must put together, in order to express what is formed as a concept in my own mind. Because of this, I feel that my problem with writing. In my youth, I had moderate difficulty in writing.

Should private schools be banned Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Should private schools be banned - Essay Example It therefore seems so from these arguments that in today’s world, education has been used to perpetrate inequality and division of social classes based on economic status because of the existence of higher education meant for the rich and wealthy in the society. Those calling for the closure of private schools believe in the fact that the current education systems institutionalises inequality and unfair treatment of education seekers just because they can’t afford the high cost of private institutions. It is interesting to note that out of the total number of school going children about 90% attend public schools while 10% attend private schools (Caldwell, 2008). Those who attend public schools have the potential of better performance as compared to their public counterparts contributing a larger percentage of students who qualify for university education in leading universities such as Cambridge and oxford. This is the highest degree of inequality as it implies that tho se who will eventually qualify for top positions in industry are those who hail from wealthy families who parents were able to sponsor their education on very expensive private institutions. In addition to this fact, the current society is typical of what can be termed as cultural capitalism and social shutting where the wealthy and privileged give their children gigantic advantages whereas the poor ones struggle in poorly managed and funded systems where only the lucky ones strive for excellence. The survival is typically of the law of the jungle where the fit survive and the weak succumb to academic death. It is vital to stress the need for all to give every child... Thi essay approves that it is in the view of this discussion that private schools tends to widen the gap between the haves and the not haves. This is because private schools exist and continues to provide better education than public schools owing to the fact those who educate children in the schools pay huge amounts of money as fees. This may not be possible for middle and low income earners as a result natural selection occurs where rich families get the opportunity to educate their young ones in private schools while the poor do not. In addition, such schools would present conditions for better performance against the state owned schools owing to their ability to employ and motivate qualified teachers, provide basic facilities and sizable classes. This report makes a conclusion that if all private schools were banned, it would give the rich an incentive to fund state owned ones since their children will to be attending alongside children from poor backgrounds. This will be a fairer way to deal with the rising difference between the rich and the poor. On the contrary, some argue that private schools offers impeccable education which may not be possible to access in state owned schools where there is limited access to resources, support persons and facilities. This is a fact that is discredited by failure by the government to fund state owned schools to the level of private schools. Therefore, it is justifiable to say that private schools should be banned. This is because private school is a major impediment to equity and valuable education for all.
